As winter approaches, our skin needs a different type of care. The changes in temperature and humidity can cause the skin to dry out, which can lead to itching and the development of rashes. It also can exacerbate underlying conditions such as eczema and psoriasis.
The following tips can help prevent the dry, itchy skin of winter!
1: Resist the temptation for hot and long showers during the winter. You should limit shower length to 5-10 minutes with more tepid water temperature. When in the shower, only use your hands to wash your skin with as well as use unscented bar soaps. We recommend bar soaps over liquid soaps, as they have fewer *ingredients and thus a less allergenic potential. Another great tip is to pat dry after a shower, leaving some water beads on the skin and within 5 minutes apply a moisturizing cream from head to toe. We recommend fragrant free moisturizing creams – no lotions in winters.
* Ingredients to look for that help to soothe dry skin include ceramides, lactic acid, urea, hyaluronic acid, dimethicone, glycerin, lanolin, mineral oil, and petrolatum. Skincare products should be fragrance-free and hypoallergenic to avoid irritating sensitive winter skin. Colognes/perfumes or other products made with alcohol should also be avoided.
2: It is always best to avoid fragrance in products as well as perfume/cologne and body sprays.
3: Avoid fabrics such as wool, acrylic, and polyester! They can be occlusive and can irritate the skin. Natural fibers, like cotton, can be gentler for the skin. It is also important to protect exposed areas from the wind and cold; hats, scarves, and gloves will help to keep those areas of the skin protected.
